HOW TO HUNT ELK EVERY YEAR WITH DRAW MORE TAGS™

Like many big game hunters, I grew up learning to hunt Whitetail deer in the mid-western United States.  As the hot, humid summers gave way to the cooling winds of autumn, you could almost feel an electric energy in the air.  Shotgun Whitetail deer season was coming!  For a young boy, hunting elk every year seemed out of reach, like something out of a hunting video or western hunting magazine.

As luck would have it, I ended up moving out west and found myself asking the question, "How do I hunt Elk every year?"  The answer is surprisingly simple, and we break it down for you below.  Here are a few ways to guarantee you will be chasing elk this fall, and every fall.

1. Plan a hunt on PUBLIC LAND. There are approximately 2.26 Million acres of public land available to hunters and outdoor enthusiast. Public land hunting is a great way to explore all types of big game hunting, and also to utilize our nation's most valuable resource available to hunters, our land!

2. Plan an OVER THE COUNTER or OTC ELK hunt. Did you know there are several states that allow you to walk right into the local sporting goods store and purchase an over the counter elk tag?  Here are a list of current states that allow all legal hunters to purchase an OTC ELK tag. Visit our HuntINFO™ section for detailed information on hunting elk in each state.

  • COLORADO
  • IDAHO
  • UTAH
  • OREGON
  • WASHINGTON

In addition, there are a few states that only allow its residents to purchase an over the counter ELK tag. If you happen to reside in one of these states, you are in luck.

  • MONTANA (RESIDENT ONLY) You must establish residence 180 days prior to obtaining an over the counter permit.
  • ARIZONA (RESIDENT ONLY) In some areas to control damage to farmland and natural resources.
  • KENTUCKY (RESIDENT ONLY) In some areas to control damage to farmland and natural resources.

3. APPLY for big game tags EVERY YEAR in as many states as you can afford to apply. This is definitely a game of patience, and in some cases, a LOT of patience.  Here are a few items we recommend as part of your annual big game draw strategy.

  • Develop a long term big game hunting strategy.
  • Apply in as many states as you can afford to apply.
  • Don't be afraid to apply for cow elk tags.
  • Keep track of your big game draw and bonus points with POINT TRACKER™.
  • Apply every year.
  • Set aside a few hundred dollars every month when possible as part of your BIG GAME FUND.  The savings will add up quickly, and you will thank us later!
